2025 Sewing Classes: A Year of Creativity in Sylvania and Lindfield

Sewing lovers, get ready for an exciting year! In 2025, Sylvania and Lindfield will offer a variety of sewing classes designed for everyone, from beginners to advanced sewists. Whether you're aiming to improve your skills or just starting your sewing journey, these classes promise to spark your creativity and enhance your techniques. Below is a detailed overview of the classes available to help you plan your sewing adventure. These cover most of the classes in the first quarter, but not all of them. Some are already fully booked and others, I'll add a link at the end for you to see. If you want to go onto waitlists for classes that are fully booked, please contact the relevant shop.


We do have internationally renowned fibre artist, Kathryn Harmer Fox, from South Africa joining us in both stores during the year. Caroline Sharkey, also an international fibre artist super star, will be back in both stores and Deborah Louie, internationally recognised free motion, applique and BERNINA expert will teach a couple of specialty classes in Sylvania and Lindfield. These will appear on the website shortly and we have opened expressions of interest lists and deposits. Anyone who has expressed interest, I will be in touch soon.

  • School Holiday reversable tote bag

When: Lindfield Tuesday 21 January

Description: Last Chance to book this school holiday workshop. Make a reversable tote bag. Lindfield store opens Tuesday morning so, to book follow the link or ring Sylvania Monday 95222340 for more information. This class runs on small numbers of participants so that you get more teacher attention.


  • Intermediate free motion and ruler work quilting skills

When: Sylvania 2 day workshop Fridays 31 January and 28 February

Description: Welcome to our class, where you will learn how to do free motion quilting guided by rulers and yourself. This is an advanced class where you gain ideas, skills and inspiration while quilting a dream big panel. You will learn what rulers are and how to use them with your machine. You will explore your machine settings. You will learn more about free motion quilting and designs as you quilt your panel.

There are very few spots remaining in this class.



February


  • Beginner's Overlocking

When:  Lindfield Saturday 1 February

Description: Gain more confidence when using your overlocker- Applicable for 3 or 4 thread overlockers. We will not be covering cover and chain stitch during this class.  An introduction to gain an understanding of threading / dials / width / length / diff feed / stitches available, rolled hemming and flatlock.


  • QuiltNSW Member Sewing Day

When:  Sylvania Saturday 1 February

Description: Join other Guild members for a day of social sewing. To book please head to the QuiltNSW website / go to events / and you should find link to Pop Up Sewing Days.


  • Social Sewing - Sit and Sew

When:  Sylvania Weekly Monday mornings and Tuesday afternoons from early February

Description: Sew with like minded people. Guide each other. Inspire each other. Chat and Sew together. No teacher in this class. To book please contact the Sylvania shop.


  • Sit and Sew including Beginner's sewing and dressmaking

When:  Sylvania Fortnightly Tuesday nights from 4 February

Description: Whether you want to hand or machine sew you are welcome in this class. You can learn machine skills, patchwork, soft furnishings, dressmaking, bag making, and more.

This class is heavily booked. If you are interested in attending please phone the shop to book.


  • Sit and Sew including Beginner's sewing and dressmaking

When:  Sylvania Fortnightly Wednesday nights from 5 February

Description: Whether you want to hand or machine sew you are welcome in this class. You can learn machine skills, patchwork, soft furnishings, dressmaking, bag making, and more.


  • ByAnnie Bags - Sit and Sew with teacher

When: Sylvania Saturday 8 February

Description: Work on one of the ByAnnie bag pattern projects under Crystal's guidance.


  • Sewing Machine Club

When:  Monthly starting Sylvania Tuesday 11 February and Lindfield Wednesday 12 February. A choice of daytime or evening classes.

Description: This is a monthly class where we do small projects in order to gain new skills on our sewing machines. You will need to purchase a kit and possibly a specialty machine foot in order to make the project and attend the class. Project / feet and skills vary from month to month. We all do the same project. In this class we will look at the hand look quilting stich and make a sashiko style stitch, pin cushion. 


  • Lorena Uriarte

When:  Sylvania Monthly starting Wednesday 12 February and Saturday 15 February

Description: Lorena has many of her own quilt options and styles to choose from, Opal Essence, Winding Ways, Kawandi, Court House Steps, Sakura Breeze just to name a few.  She can guide you through a project you need help with or start you on beginner's blocks to start your journey. Come and learn how to sew patchwork.


  • How to maintain your modern Bernina machine at home

When: Lindfield Wednesday 12 February

Description: Our technician Ian, will guide you where to clean and oil, parts to "defluff", the correct maintenance processes to carry out at home between major services.

We will be scheduling classes for other brand machines.


  • Machine Embroidery

When: Monthly starting February 14 Sylvania and Friday 28 February Lindfield

Description: The aim of the class is you build confidence and skills on your embroidery machine. New techniques are used each month, as we make the My Happy Place Quilt. Learn about different stabilisers and when to use them. Alternatively, you can construct as you wish, not as this pattern layout, adding extra blocks as you go, or making smaller projects each month. Imagine the trees as a runner. An assortment of flowers on a cushion. The dimensional pinwheels as a quilt. The possibilities are many.

  • Overlocking skill building

  When: Monthly starting February 7 Sylvania and Friday 21 February Lindfield

  Description: The aim of the class is you build confidence and skills on your overlocker. New techniques are used each month, as we make the Bloom and Grow quilt by Amanda Murphy. You don't need to make a quilt you can make smaller projects from the pieces each month.


  • ByAnnie Zip It Up Bag

When: Lindfield Wednesday 19 February

Description: Available in two sizes, you’ll stay organized with Zip It Up 2.0 organizers!   • Beginner's Patchwork Piecing

  When: A series of 5 classes through February, April and May in Lindfield

  Description: In this series of 5 classes, you will learn a variety of patchwork techniques. This is a machine pieced class. If you do want to learn hand sewing to make the quilt, please be aware there is a lot more homework you will need to do. 


  • When Life gives you scraps - pleated log cabin

When: Sylvania Wednesday 19 February

Description: Join like minded people and use up all your scraps. We will be in store and familiar with the current month's project, we will set you up and answer your questions as they arise. We will give you cutting instructions in order to bring your scraps ready and you can swap with those around you to get the required colour movements and shades in order to start making the project (quilts, bags, pin cushions, accessories) in that class and at home.

  • Slow Stitchers Club

When: Sylvania Tuesday 25 February (Monthly)

Description: This is a hand sewing, embroidery, embellishment and fibre art class. There are a range of options and styles that you choose from. Vicky will help and guide you to create your own style. It’s a fun, supportive and social environment, in which you can learn new skills and get the opportunity to sew. Bring your own project or we can make suggestions for you.


  • Brother Made to Quilt Open Day

When: Lindfield Wednesday 26 February

Description: Join us in store for a fun day testing machines and watching new techniques. Demonstrations, tea and biscuits :)


  • Sew 25 Club - Sit and Sew

When: Both stores Thursday 27 February (Monthly)

Description: Join like minded people and make your Sew 25 Club projects.  This is a sit and sew where you all help each other and come to us at the counter if you need more help. There is no teacher in the room/ The Sew '25 box is a fabulous collaboration between the Creative Abundance team and the Tilda Sanctuary fabric range. The fabrics and pattern box are in store now and available for purchase.

  • Q16/20/24 frame long arm training - frame training / basic Qmatic training

When: Sylvania Monday 3 March

Description: This class will have a maximum of 4 participants, so that you can all use our Q24 and discuss as a small group, techniques, tip and tricks. Vicky will impart her incredible knowledge to you, so that you can more confidently use your machines at home. 


  • Slow Stitchers Club

When: Lindfield 4 March (Monthly)

Description: This is a hand sewing, embroidery, embellishment and fibre art class. There are a range of options and styles that you choose from. Janne will help and guide you to create your own style. It’s a fun, supportive and social environment, in which you can learn new skills and get the opportunity to sew. We can help you with your project or make suggestions of ones for you to start on.


  • Tie time - Upcycling

When: Lindfield Thursday 6 March

Description: Make an art piece, a bag, a furnishing item, or a new piece of clothing. Use them to decorate or make a new piece. This class teaches sustainable sewing practices, focusing on reducing waste. Expect to create a project using fabric scraps or thrifted materials, with an emphasis on repurposing.



  • Brother made to Quilt Open Day

When: Sylvania Thursday 6 March

Description: Join us in store for a fun day testing machines and watching new techniques. Demonstrations, tea and biscuits :)


  • Deborah Louie - Applique 4 ways

When: Sylvania Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 March

Description: A technique class, Learn how to perfectly Machine Applique in 4 different techniques. Decorative Stitch Applique (flowers, satin stitches, cross stitches), Blind Hem Applique (looks like hand needle turn), Blanket Stitch Applique (perfect corners, points and circles) and Sketch Free Motion Applique (Raw edge textural applique). Working with 12 weight cotton threads, Mono Poly, Bobbin Fill and Shiny 40 wt. polyester threads. Suits beginner to intermediate skill levels.


  • Sewing Machine Club

When:  Monthly starting Sylvania Tuesday 11 March and Lindfield Wednesday 12 March. A choice of daytime or evening classes.

Description: This is a monthly class where we do small projects in order to gain new skills on our sewing machines. You will need to purchase a kit and possibly a specialty machine foot in order to make the project and attend the class. Project / feet and skills vary from month to month. We all do the same project. Topics Covered in this class are Free motion applique, Quilting Basics, Binding Basics. This content in this class may be continued into a further class for completion.


  • When Life gives you scraps - BoHo style cushion

When: Sylvania Wednesday 12 March

Description: Join like minded people and use up all your scraps. We will be in store and familiar with the current month's project, we will set you up and answer your questions as they arise. We will give you cutting instructions in order to bring your scraps ready and you can swap with those around you to get the required colour movements and shades in order to start making the project (quilts, bags, pin cushions, accessories) in that class and at home.  


  • ByAnnie Bag 1 day Workshop - Hot and Heavy

When: Sylvania Thursday 13 March

Description: Fashionable and cute, these spacious zippered bags in two sizes will hold a variety of items or your favourite mini or regular-sized household iron. Also doubles as a cute and functional purse.


  • One block Wonder Kaleidoscope

When: Lindfield Friday 14 March

Description: Make an effective quilt out of one fabric. See how the pattern on the fabric morphs into one that is completely different. Learn how to cut and piece your fabric.

  Description: If you would like to know more about free motion quilting and gain some new skills then this is the class for you. Learn the basic shapes, movements and patterns.


  • It's a stretch, garments from limited fabrics

When: Lindfield Saturdays 22 and 29 March

Description: Ever found yourself with not enough fabric to make the item you want? Do you have an expensive fabric that you can't afford to make the full garment from? Do you have tea towels and old napery that you would like to up cycle into a garment? This 2 series class helps you design and make your garment.

  • Repairs and Upcycling

  When: Lindfield Thursday 3 April

  Description: Upcycle your old clothes into a new piece. This could be a men's shirt into a woman's one or a child's dress. It could be an item with a stain embellised to cover the marks and make it fresh. It could be combining a range of garments and fabrics into one. You can even just repair and make it functional again. This class teaches sustainable sewing practices, focusing on reducing waste. Expect to create a project using fabric scraps or thrifted materials, with an emphasis on repurposing.


  • Sewing Machine Club

When:  Monthly starting Sylvania Tuesday 8 April and Lindfield Wednesday 9 April. A choice of daytime or evening classes.

Topics Covered in this class are, Basics working with vinyl - making a notebook cover. Different feet options, Different vinyl types, Looking at needle types.
